Obediah Smith

Elder Obediah SMITH, Capt.
born 12 Oct 1806 in Pulaski Co., Kentucky, died 18 Apr 1863,
represented Cedar County in the Missouri Legislature, 1862-63.

Soon after his return from the session of 1862-63 he was assassinated at his farm
near Cedar Springs, Cedar Co., Missouri, by Quantrill's Raiders for his stubborn
loyalty to the Union and intolerance toward local secessionist sympathizers.
He also lost five of his seven sons in the War.

The 'Eld' preceding his name on his gravestone was for 'Elder', the title used for their
ordained ministers by the local primitive Baptist Church, which he helped to form.
